How to install fonts on your computer (Mac and PC)

If we design a document for you that you’ll be editing down the road or updating frequently, there’s a good chance that some of the fonts within that document aren’t installed on your computer. If you open that document or try to edit it before installing the new fonts, it won’t look the way it should because the fonts aren’t saved directly in the document. In order for the document to display correctly, you need to install the correct fonts on your computer.

It’s important to install any new fonts before you open the files that contain those fonts, and today we’re going to teach you how to do just that. Don’t worry, new fonts are super easy to install on both Mac and Windows operating systems.

Installing fonts on a Mac

  1. Download the font files we emailed you; they end in either .ttf or .otf.
  2. Double click the file. Fontbook will automatically open in a pop-up window.
  3. Click Install font. Installation should take a few seconds.
  4. Open the program you need to use the font in, and you should be ready to go! If the font isn’t showing up in the program you’re using, restart the program and try again.

Installing fonts on a PC (Windows 7, 8, and 10)

  1. Download the font files we emailed you; they end in either .ttf or .otf.
  2. Unzip the folder.
  3. Right click on the font file and click Install. You may be prompted to enter your password in order to complete installation.
  4. Open the program you need to use the font in, and you should be ready to go! If the font isn’t showing up in the program you’re using, restart the program and try again.

Tip: To keep your font files organized and easy to find, save them in a separate folder on your computer. This also ensures that you don’t accidentally delete any font files when clearing out your Downloads folder.

Once you’ve installed the fonts, you’re all set to edit your documents whenever you need. Be sure to save any documents as PDFs before sending them out; this ensures that other people will be able to view the document as intended, even if they don’t have the necessary fonts on their computer.
