2018 New Year’s Resolutions for Small Businesses

2018 is right around the corner, but it’s not too late to set some practical new year’s resolutions for your small business. Being a small business ourself, we love seeing (and helping!) other small businesses succeed. That’s why we’ve put together a list of New Year’s resolution ideas to make 2018 your best year yet.

Set Quarterly Goals
Annual goals are great, but too often they slip to the back burner because the year is so long. Quarterly goals make it easier to measure your success throughout the year and meet milestones along the way, rather than waiting until December to note any progress.

Quarterly goals could include:

  • Grow quarterly revenue by X amount
  • Establish one new lead pipeline each quarter
  • Get 3 new five-star reviews on Yelp, Google, etc, each quarter

Get Social
Social media can serve as free marketing for your business, but it can be hard to dedicate the time to consistently maintain each platform. In 2018, set specific goals to increase your online presence through social media. If you don’t have the time to devote to each platform, just choose one to focus on. If you choose this route, be mindful of where your target market is.

Social media goals could include:

  • Spend 15 minutes of each workday engaging with your social media followers
  • Post on Facebook 3-5 times a week
  • Share 2-3 relevant articles on your company’s LinkedIn profile each week

Try Something New
If you’re in a rut of doing the same things in your business each year just because “that’s what you’ve always done,” resolve to try something new in 2018!

New goals could include:

  • Try a new marketing tactic (AdWords, print flyers, etc)
  • Implement an email campaign
  • Start a company blog

Relearn Your Audience
You probably took a lot of time to study and define your target audience when you first started your business. As years pass, it’s easy to assume that those characteristics haven’t changed since day one. But your original audience is aging, and perhaps the once younger generation has taken its place. Trends change, marketing strategies evolve, and it’s vital for you to continually learn target market. Resolve to relearn your audience this year so that you can reach them better than ever before.

Some questions you can ask to understand your audience:

  • Where do they spend their time?
  • What are their needs?
  • What qualities do they value?
  • How can I make their lives easier?
