What are Some of This Year’s Trends in Logo Design?

Trends are always changing, from what we wear, to where we eat, to what we say. Logo design is no different, and it is vital for companies to be aware of trends to keep their logo and brand current.

This does not mean:

  • Changing your logo every year because a new trend has started.
  • Making your logo look like every other logo.

It does mean:

  • Staying aware of your logo to see how it does or doesn’t flow with current design trends.
  • Occasionally “refreshing” your logo to keep it current.
  • Sometimes letting go of a logo that you’ve always had in order to create a timeless logo that really engages customers.

We’ve compiled a list of some of 2017’s logo design trends. (Scroll to the bottom to see a graphic of our logos over the years!)

Minimalism

Less is more when it comes to this trend. Companies are opting for simpler logos with less elements. Think of Olive Garden’s recent logo change. Their classic rustic logo with ornate olive branches was replaced with a simpler font and cleaner graphics that still represent their brand well.

Minimalistic logos often use sans serif fonts and lots of white space. This creates a clean, crisp look that’s easy on the eyes. Minimalism has influenced many of the other logo design trends.

Line Art
This trend stems from minimalism. Line art logos are intentionally flat-looking and composed primarily of lines, straight or curved. These lines maintain the same thickness throughout the design. Additionally, they are typically placed against a plain background.
Geometric
Simple shapes can express brands in a powerful way. Geometric logos have been popular for a long time, and we don’t think they’ll be going anywhere any time soon.
Letterform
A letterform logo uses a letter (or letters) to represent a brand (think McDonald’s). When done well, this simple design can leave a lasting impression.

Your logo is the cornerstone of your brand. It is what comes to mind when people hear your business name and often what initially attracts them to your business. The graphic below showcases a few of our logo designs over the years, displaying how trends have shifted with time.
